Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo[note 1] (pronounced [ala vaɪ̯kuṇʈʰapuramu loː]; transl. There in Vaikunthapuram) is a 2020 Indian Telugu-language action drama film[5][6][7] written and directed by Trivikram Srinivas, and produced by Allu Aravind and S. Radha Krishna under their banners Geetha Arts and Haarika & Hassine Creations.[8] The film stars Allu Arjun, Pooja Hegde, Tabu, Jayaram, Sushanth, and Nivetha Pethuraj while Samuthirakani, Murali Sharma, Rajendra Prasad, Navdeep, Sunil, Sachin Khedekar, and Harsha Vardhan play supporting roles.[9]

The plot follows Bantu (Allu Arjun) who is hated and neglected by his father Valmiki (Sharma). Bantu later learns that he was swapped as an infant and his biological father is an affluent businessman, Ramachandra (Jayaram). Bantu enters Ramachandra's house, Vaikuntapuram to protect his biological family when it is threatened by an influential man. The idea of swapping infants was earlier attempted in Vedantam Raghavaiah's Inti Guttu (1958), starring N. T. Rama Rao and Savitri.[10]

Production of the film began on April 2019, and wrapped up within December 2019. It was filmed across Hyderabad, with songs being shot in overseas. The film features soundtrack composed by S. Thaman, while cinematography and editing were handled by P. S. Vinod and Naveen Nooli, respectively. After premiering in the United States on 11 January 2020, the film was released theatrically on 12 January, coinciding with Sankranti, along with its dubbed Malayalam version titled as Angu Vaikunthrapurathu.

The film opened to positive reviews, with critics praising Allu Arjun and Murali Sharma's performances, Trivikram's writing and direction and Thaman's music and film’s score. The film was commercially successful and with a gross ₹262.05 crore (US$37 million), it ended up as one of the highest-grossing Telugu films, and also one of the highest grossing Indian films in 2020.[9] It also became one of the highest-grossing Telugu films in the United States, collecting more than $3 million upon release.[11][12]

Producer Radha Krishna, on 10 July 2019, announced the film's release date through social media platforms, as the film will release on the occasion of Sankranthi.[55] On 12 October 2019, the makers announced that the film will be released on 12 January 2020,[56] which falls on the Sankranthi weekend.[57] In mid-December 2019, it was rumoured that the film will release on 10 January, earlier than the scheduled date.[58] The film received U/A certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification on 3 January 2020.[59] On 4 January, the Active Telugu Film Producers Guild cleared rumours surrounding the release date and was reported that the film will be released on the scheduled date.[60]

The film's Malayalam version titled Angu Vaikunthapurathu, and was released simultaneously on the same date. Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo was premiered at IMAX Melbourne, one of the largest cinema theatre in the world.[61] It was also released on 11 January 2020, in the United States, a day before its official release in India.[62]

The film was also dubbed and released in Tamil and Kannada as Vaikundapuram and Haage Vaikunthapuradalli respectively.

Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo's theatrical rights in the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana region were sold to ₹65.96 crore (US$9.2 million),[63] with Nizam rights for ₹20 crore (US$2.8 million),[63] Ceded rights for ₹12.06 crore (US$1.7 million),[63] ₹8.50 crore (US$1.2 million) in the Uttarandhra territories,[63] Guntur rights for ₹6.30 crore (US$880,000),[63] Krishna rights for ₹5 crore (US$700,000),[63] rights in the East and West Godavari regions for ₹6.30 crore (US$880,000) and ₹5 crore (US$700,000) respectively,[63] and Nellore rights for ₹2.80 crore (US$390,000).[63] Karnataka theatrical rights were sold to ₹7.20 crore (US$1.0 million).[63] Theatrical rights for the rest of India were sold to ₹1.50 crore (US$210,000) and overseas rights for ₹9.80 crore (US$1.4 million).[63] The film shelled out ₹84.46 crore (US$12 million), in its worldwide theatrical rights.[63] This includes print and advertising costs for ₹4 crore (US$560,000),[63] broadcasting rights for ₹23.50 crore (US$3.3 million),[63] Hindi dubbing rights (sold to Goldmines Telefilms) for ₹19 crore (US$2.7 million) and other rights for ₹2.50 crore (US$350,000),[63] totaling up to ₹133 crore (US$19 million), before the film's release.[63]

Marketing Edit
On 15 August 2019, coinciding with Independence Day,[64] the makers unveiled the first glimpse of the film,[65] revealing its title as Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo.[66][67] The film's first look poster was released on the eve of Ganesh Chathurthi, 1 September 2019.[68][69] It features Allu Arjun seen sitting on a dusted stool in a businessman's suit, a security guard lights his cigar (beedi), and a shiny luxury car and a gigantic building in the background.[70][71] Coinciding with the occasion of Dusshera, the makers unveiled a special poster on 7 October 2019, featuring Arjun in an action avatar.[72]

The makers revealed a special poster featuring Pooja Hegde on her birthday, 13 October 2019.[73] Sushanth's first look from the film was released on 21 October.[74] Tabu's first look released on the occasion of her birthday, 4 November 2019.[75] On Trivikram's birthday, 7 November, the makers released the first look of the film's Malayalam version Angu Vaikunthapurathu, through social media platforms.[76] The film's official teaser was unveiled on 11 December 2019.[77][78][79]

On 6 January 2020, the makers planned for a huge promotional event, known as AVPL Musical Concert, at the Yousufguda Police Grounds in Hyderabad.[80] Touted to be the biggest event ever in the South Indian film industry, a stage that is 52-feet high and 162-feet wise was prepared for the event,[81] where the makers unveiled the film's audio album and theatrical trailer.[82] The event received great response from film buffs and audiences.[83]

The film's satellite and digital rights were sold to Sun TV Network.[84] The film's digital premiere took place on Sun NXT on 27 February 2020, after 49 days of its theatrical run.[85] The same day, the makers released the film through Netflix, with English subtitles,[85] with the Malayalam dubbed version released through the platform on 4 March 2020.[86] The film's world television premiere took place on 16 August 2020, through Gemini TV.[87] It registered a record TRP[clarification needed] rating of 29.4,[88] highest for a Telugu film ever, surpassing Sarileru Neekevvaru (2020) and Baahubali: The Beginning (2015), which earlier had TRP rating of 23.5 and 22.00 respectively.[89][90]
